SOTD: Tool – Lateralus

There’s not really a story behind this. When I was in university I heard it on my flatmate’s computer and fell in love with it. It’s the musical equivalent of a mood stabilizer for me.

SOTD: ( @falloutboy) Fall Out Boy – Dance, Dance

So four years ago I went home for the whole summer. I spent it basically as my parents’ housekeeper, on meds, and trying not to go totally crazy (because occasionally I am mentally unstable like a fox). Most of my time was spent watching music; surfing through channels to find the songs I really wanted to listen to.

I’d never watched the video for Sugar, We’re Going Down (the song released previous to this one) because the first few seconds of the video annoyed me; also, I wasn’t really in any fit state to be making judgement calls. But I’d ended up switching this one on about half way through and got sucked in by the tiny dudes playing guitars, one of whom was wearing eyeliner and licking one of the other dudes’ guitar and I fell a little bit in love with PWentz (not in a way where I found him attractive, exactly, although he's not unattractive - but if there’s a week where I don’t fall in love with someone to some capacity or another it’s a bad week. Last week it was the girl doing magic tricks in Hamley’s). Then there was an interim period where I think I got them confused with another band that I didn’t like, and kinda avoided them, but I’d rather not talk about that.

Two years later, again while mentally unstable like a fox, I ended up with Sugar, We’re Going Down and It’s Not A Side Effect Of The Cocaine; I Am Thinking It Must Be Love on some random playlists that a friend had made. I listened, liked, but I didn’t really know who they were. I figured it out a few months later (when every time I listened to them I just couldn't stop smiling, bought almost their entire back catalogue, and have been totally obsessed with them ever since. I’m now one of http://thefortysixthirtytwo.com. It’s pretty awesome.

Say what you like about their music – like it or don’t like it; like any other art, it’s completely subjective – but I don’t think there’s a single band who does as much for their fans, or takes their fans down the rabbit-hole half as often to new and exciting adventures, as this one.

This song – and indeed this whole album – is awesome. The end.

Just…turn this up, close your eyes and listen.

(Okay, so today’s SOTD was going to be Tori Amos’s Cornflake Girl, but it’s not on Grooveshark so I’ll have to upload the entirety of Tales of a Librarian at some point and do that one another day.)

SOTD: The Cure: The Loudest Sound

I love this song. The music is almost-but-not-quite melancholy, almost-but-not-quite an emotion which is nearly happiness, but comes closer to ‘smiling a little bit’, and lands almost directly on ‘wistful’. The lyrics land quite solidly on the ‘sad’ side of wistful:

“Side by side in silence they pass away the day. So comfortable, so habitual, and so nothing left to say. Nothing left to say. Nothing left to say. Side by side in silence his thoughts echo ‘round. He looks up at the skies, yeah; she looks down at the ground…stares down at the ground. Stares down at the ground. Side by side in silence they wish for different worlds: she dreams him as a boy, and he loves her as a girl. Loves her as a girl. And side by side in silence, without a single word. It’s the loudest sound. It’s the loudest sound. It’s the loudest sound I ever heard.“

SOTD: The Music – Turn Out The Light

So when I was in my 3rd year of uni, my best friend came to Edinburgh to study at Napier Uni, and she moved in with us. More than once I’d walk past her room as this song came on, and there was something about the first few bars that did that thing that I can’t explain (for the sake of argument I’ll call it the squee!factor, but that’s not quite right). Every time I’d ask her, “who is that?” to which she’d reply, “The Music”, to which my response would be, “yeah, the music, who is it?”, to which she’d respond, “The Music”, to which I would reply, “yes. The music. Who is it??” &c. &c. to the point where it was a bit like a sketch except both of us were deadly serious and getting increasingly exasperated.

This only ended when I finally got the album. MONTHS later.

Actually, if you haven’t already, you should listen to the whole of this eponymous album. Because it’s AWESOME.

Today's SOTD is actually a playlist, because I was very very angry at the world all day, so I made a playlist of angry songs. I'm not saying I felt any better, but it didn't hurt.

(If you're thinking that one of these songs is not like the other, you'd be right. It was suggested by a friend, and it seemed to balance things out. I'm not sure I'd put Nickleback on an angry playlist generally, though. Well, maybe their first album. That's pretty rocking. Bonus points if you can tell me the name without the use of Google or Wiki.)

Oh, this song.

NIN - Only

As a short aside, I once saw a comment on YouTube where someone had called the album With Teeth (on which this song appears) 'classic Nine Inch Nails'. I don't think I've laughed so hard in all my life. I ADORE this album, but I wouldn't describe it as 'classic Nine Inch Nails'.

I love this song, and I love Jordin Sparks, but I really, REALLY don't like Chris Brown. So I'm SOTDing the Glee Cast Version of this song.
