Regina Spektor – Samson



So the first time I heard this song, I was 20. My most-recent-ex-at-the-time had made me a mix CD because while we were still dating I’d heard Tori Amos’s version of Smells Like Teen Spirit (which if you’d never heard I’d suggest you listen to, like, instantly) over at hers and been like OMG, and a couple of weeks after we broke up she realised she hadn’t given me a copy like she promised and put it on a mix CD for me (because we stayed friends after we broke up. This is something I do).

But anyway, about a few months later she made me another one, and Samson was on it. Not this version; this version is on the 2006 album Begin to Hope; the version I have (well, I have Begin to Hope as well but you know what I mean) is from the 2002 Songs. I personally think the first version is better, but that’s very much a matter of personal taste.

I love this entire (eponymous) album. If you’ve never listened, I suggest you do so ASAP. (It contains the song Semi-Charmed Life, which you will recognise from the radio in the late ‘90s, although there will be some lyrics that you don’t recognise because apparently it wasn’t considered ‘done’ to play songs about how awesome crystal meth is on radio.)

This song in particular is just kind of perfect. I can't justify that exactly, but if you listen you'll know what I mean.

So this was the first song that Panic(!) released after the split, and it made me grin so wide I thought my face was going to split. As always, Brendon Urie's voice makes me smile, and the song itself (featuring lyrics such as 'can we fast forward to go down on me?' and 'you come along because I love your face') is utterly joyful.

In September 2008, I saw GCH live for the first time. I got robbed and punched in the face by 12 year olds with knives while waiting in line (gotta love London), made some amazing friends, got one of Matt McGinley's drum sticks (because the security guard felt sorry for me because of the whole getting punched thing), met the band, and it remains one of the most amazing gig experiences of my life. Half the gig I couldn't even sing along, I was smiling so hard.

From the first moment I heard this song on the album, I knew the atmosphere when it was played live would be amazing. And it was; the entire venue had a buzz to it that can't be put into words.

This whole album is amazing, I could - and did - listen to it ten times in a row. You should too.

After the clusterfuck that was the vote in NJ yesterday (and after DC and NH I’d started to hope again – silly me) I’ve been listening to inspirational songs all day. This one I can’t help but like, because it does help.

(I recommended to my 11 year old niece that she listen to this song, which I think makes me the worst Godmother ever, but she was singing the GaGa song with the Disco Stick lyric in it! I panicked!)

This song, from Adam Lambert’s debut album For Your Entertainment (the title track from which being the song that he performed at the AMAs which caused all the controversy) was co-written by Ryan Tedder (of OneRepublic, co-writer of songs like ‘Apologize’ and ‘Bleeding Love’, written for Leona Lewis (which was also co-written by Jesse McCartney, but the less said about him the better)) and, like many Ryan Tedder songs, breaks your heart in the best possible way. If this song had been around for me immediately post-breakup, you KNOW it would have gone on the playlist.

(Yes, I did make a breakup playlist. You KNOW none of you are surprised. I make playlists for EVERYTHING.)

I’ve been listening to this album pretty much non-stop since Christmas Day. I must have listened to it somewhere in the region of 30-40 times and I’m so very much not bored of it yet. I figure I’ve got another couple of months.

I'm at home for Christmas, and as I flip through the channels post-family viewing of Agatha Christie's Poirot I noticed that the 2009 AMAs were showing on a music channel called 'VIVA'. I'd never heard of this music channel before, but as I'd not had a chance to see the AMAs I pretty much jumped at the chance. Especially as I'm a huge Adam Lambert fan, and wanted to see his performance on a screen bigger than the tiny one on YouTube.

The first performance was by Janet Jackson who, half way through her performance, grabbed the crotch of a male dancer for a considerable time, in a fairly sexually charged fashion. Fair enough, I thought. It's after 9pm, which is the watershed in this country, so that's fine.

Almost two hours later, nearing 11pm, Adam Lambert's performance is finally upon us. I broke off a conversation with my brother (which included hilarious stories about how he always seemed to have to break up fights in his pub on his nights off) in order to give the performance my full attention.

I'm currently planning my letter of complaint to the music channel.

They kept the kiss, which I think they knew they wouldn't have got away with censoring.

What they didn't keep was the moment where, as Ryan Seacrest so charmingly put it, "a dude snorkled in [Adam's] crotch". This was, in my opinion, no more sexually charged than Janet Jackson's performance, and yet despite being almost two hours later this was censored out.

I try to keep this blog all about the music (and, at some point, movies and TV shows), and keep my politics out of it, but since this is an intersect I'm going to make an exception this once.

I do NOT agree with what this music channel did. There are more raunchy things going on in music videos at 6pm than there were in that moment, but for some reason if it's two guys, it's not okay. This double standard is something which I will not stand by and watch happening. I will not accept it. I will not agree with it. And I will not stop pointing it out when I see it.

(In related news, I'm getting Adam Lambert's album for my birthday. Which is - oh, hey, it's the 24th now! My birthday's tomorrow! GLEE!!!!)
